In today’s fast-paced, oftentimes isolated world, the one unifying factor is perhaps music, which defies all boundaries of language, culture, race or even physical borders. It is a form of verbal communication that touches the heart, brings two strangers together and quickens the formation of new relationships. Especially when put into a context alongside social justice movements, songs cease to be simple leisure time activities; rather, they become a means through which community is built, transformation is sought, and a collective sense of self is cultivated. Let us examine the interplay between music and – movements with a focus on strengthening communities.
An Outlet for the Bends
Music has acted as a catalyst for many social and cultural advancements. From the freedom songs of the American civil rights movement to the peace and anti-colonization lyrics of reggae, songs have always provided a voice for the voiceless. People of different backgrounds engage in the same and know that in as much as their values/ experiences/ or emotions are different, the attachment is familiar.
2. A Social Change Catalyst
